Since China participated in the signing of the Basel Convention in 1989, China's hazardous waste treatment industry has experienced 29 years of development, and the industry really started because of the outbreak of SARS in 2003. With the introduction of a series of policies, China's hazardous waste treatment industry has ushered in a good development opportunity. Due to the unique nature of the hazardous waste industry, the speed of development of the industry is determined to be related to the level of technological development in the industry. According to SOOPAT statistics, in 2018, the number of patent applications in China's hazardous waste industry reached 306.

The hazardous waste treatment industry combines physics, chemistry, biology and other scientific technologies. It has the characteristics of technical compound type and high technical threshold. At present, China is in the process of technological transformation of hazardous waste treatment. Only enterprises with deep technical foundation and technological development potential have strong competitiveness and thus have achieved considerable development.
 
According to statistics, in 2012-2017, the patent technology of China's hazardous waste industry showed a rapid growth trend. In 2012, the number of patent applications for hazardous waste industry was only 21, and by 2017, the number of patent applications for hazardous waste industry reached 319, with a compound annual growth rate of 72.31%. By the end of 2018, the number of patent applications in China's hazardous waste industry reached 306, a slight decrease from the previous year.
 
Two major types of treatment technologies for hazardous waste industry: incineration and landfill
At present, there are two main types of treatment technologies in the hazardous waste industry, namely incineration and landfill. The incineration method is a high-temperature treatment technology for hazardous waste. After the hazardous waste is incinerated in the first combustion chamber at a temperature of 850 ° C, the generated flue gas is incinerated in a second combustion chamber at a temperature of 1200 ° C to destroy various harmful substances. This method has the advantages of high degree of reduction and harmlessness. However, due to defects in the incineration process or improper operation, it is easy to cause a small amount of polychlorinated biphenyls (VCB>, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH> incomplete or trace treatment). The production of dioxins (PCDD); and the heavy metals in the fly ash and bottom ash remain unprocessable. Therefore, appropriate pretreatment techniques are needed to reduce such effects, and then harmless by reprocessing techniques. Landfill is a commonly used hazardous waste treatment technology with the characteristics of economy, large processing capacity and low energy consumption.

From the perspective of patent distribution, at present, wastewater sludge treatment is a major technological innovation direction in the hazardous waste industry. By the end of 2018, the number of patents for wastewater and sludge treatment was the highest, accounting for 16.66%; followed by waste and fuel incineration, accounting for 12.87%; the third is separation technology, accounting for 9.02%.
